On January 1, 2004, the position of the Head of GGFC was passed on. After seven years of service as the Head, Ben Chao stepped down and
wishes to thank all SB Chairs and members for volunteering their hard work and effort in serving the community. The new Head is Tonie van Dam,
unanimously chosen among all SBs. Her term will be 2005-2008 and extendable to 2012.
GGFC Symposia/Workshops/Special Sessions:
1998: The 1998
International Earth Rotation (IERS) Workshop was held in Potsdam,
Germany, during Sep. 28 to Oct. 2, 1998. One of the 3 main topics of the
Workshop was Monitoring Global Geophysical Fluids, a 2 full-day affair
participated by 30-50 scientists. It was organized into 8 sub-sessions
according to the activities of the then 7 Special Bureaus plus one under
the title "Torques".
1999: A dedicated Geodesy special session, entitle "Geodynamic Effects of Mass Transports in Global Geophysical Fluids", was held at the Fall AGU'99 meeting, San Francisco, Dec. 15, 1999, co-chaired by B. Chao and C. Wilson. All then 7 Special Bureaus of GGFC gave scientific overview presentations, in addition to a large number of poster presentations.
1999: At the same AGU meeting as above, GGFC's Special Bureau for the Core (V. Dehant) co-sponsored a Union session entitled "Core Structure and Rotation".
2002: The 2002 International Earth Rotation (IERS) Workshop on Combination Research and Global Geophysical Fluids was held in the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, Munich, Germany, November 18 - 21, 2002, participated by over 100 scientists. The GGFC portion was organized into 8 Special Bureau sub-sessions during two full days of intensive presentations and discussions, followed by an all-hands meeting discussing future prospects of GGFC.
2002: A dedicated Geodesy special session, entitle "Geodesy at the Solid-Fluid Interface", was held at the Fall AGU'2002 meeting, San Francisco, Dec. 9, 2002, co-chaired by R. Gross and C. Wilson. In addition to oral presentations, all 8 Special Bureaus of GGFC gave invited posters.
2003: A visiting scientist fellowship was estabished through the support of the
Descartes Prize Grant from Veronique Dehant. The associated work is initiated by David Salstein and is to upgrade the data services,
starting with SB Atmosphere.
GGFC business meetings were conducted as follows. These meetings were mostly open to public, and attended by the Special Bureau Chairs and other interested scientists (and followed by a group dinner at a best restaurant in town):
December 8, 2003, San Francisco, USA, during the American Geophysical Union's 2003 Fall Meeting
